  About

In Spring 2023, my 2008 hockey player set a goal for himself to make the competitive team in Kanata that fall, until that decision he had only ever played House (B level). A key part of the plan to achieve the goal was more ice time - much more! Despite playing in the 4-on-4 league, it was not enough, plus he wanted more 5-on-5 hockey.

The first session was organized with a bunch of his friends from the house level in Kanata with the agreement that each player would equally cover the cost of the ice.

Every player had a great time, so we decided to do it again. Each session growing in popularity with a wider audience and we had a wide range of players from house to competitive and ages ranging a 5-year span (all under 18).

The kids have a tonne of fun, the hockey has been great and with our music playlist, we have a little something in for the parents.

We will continue to organize these sessions as long as there is interest. The current age group is players whose birth years are 2007-2011, although we do make exceptions since it is pick-up hockey. Drop an email to louise@computerpros.ca to ask.

To keep the costs down, last minute ice, is booked, this means that ice time can only be booked approximately two weeks in advance. Ice booked further out than that is ~40% more expensive. With last minute ice the cost is $14 for an hour session or $20 for 1.5 hour session per player. Since we charge just enough to cover the cost of the ice, payments are non-refundable.

How to sign-up

Signing up is done through google forms on a first come, first served basis. Your player's spot is guaranteed once payment has been received. Since the cost per player is just enough to cover the cost of the ice, payments are non-refundable.

Sign-up and payment details are sent via email or using the links on the right of this page. To get added to the email distribution list, complete this form: https://forms.gle/jcGotSiaKXodnLeKA

For a 60-minute ice time, the number of players is capped at 20 skaters and 2 goalies; for a 90-minute ice time the cap is 30 skaters and 2 goalies. There is a separate google form for each position to help with team balancing. Once we reach 20 skaters and 2 goalies, the google forms close and players can add their name to the wait list using the link. Most sessions typically only have 1-2 players on the wait list, so in these cases we admit the player(s) to the session. Any extra money charged will be put against future ice times where we may not have the full number of participants required to cover the cost and this will keep the price consistent throughout the summer.

A day or two before the ice time (once all payments have been received and players confirmed), a list with the team and change room assignments will be sent to the session participants.

If we do not get enough players registered for 5-on-5, we play 4-on-4.

Game Format

This is fun informal hockey however to keep everyone safe, please share the following with your players:

  • No body checking
  • All standard protective equipment must be worn, including neck guard
  • Equal shifts for players
Each ice time has a HEO certified trainer on-site. If players need anything, they only need to ask Louise; she will have her trainer bag at all ice times and can address most equipment issues. She also has spare jerseys with her as well.

Each ice time also will have an on-ice presence or ref. The ref will ensure the flow of the game.

Game play is continuous with face-offs only taking place after a goal is scored. Offsides and icings will be called but no stoppage in play.

60-minute sessions
After a short warm-up, the game will be 2 x 22 run-time periods with a short break between.

90-minute sessions
After a short warm-up, the game will be 3 x 25 run-time periods with a short break between periods.

The format is to keep the game play at the maximum. If the play is lopsided or the goal differential is 5 goals or more after one period, the teams will switch sides but the goalies will stay in their original nets. Instructions will be given by the on-ice volunteer.
